In terms of preparation, this year we have studied a greater amount of critical theory which has then aided our understanding of media texts and their construction. Whereas last year we focused purely on the use of camera, sound, editing and mise-en-scene in certain media texts and how they help to reinforce or break with certain generic conventions, this year we have looked at these connotations and how they help to both give out a message and sell a product.
This therefore meant that when it came to analysing a music video this year, I was able to understand why certain shots and ideas were included, and not just be able to link their connotations. Whilst the new theories have been difficult to understand, they have greatly improved my understanding of some key terms and how and why media texts are constructed in the way that they are.
