Group - thursday lesson

On Thursday we had the opportunity to use the cameras for the first time this academic year. As a class, we were given different sections of the song 'Hey Ya' by Outkast to record part of a collective video for. We were given the section from 3:18 to 4:28 on the video below individually, whilst we also performed extra material for the introduction and end of the video.

This was a useful task for us because it gave us the chance to work on the spot and see how our creative ideas could be transformed immediately onto the screen. Furthermore, these ideas could be further enhanced, as for the first time we got to grips with the new equipment we have for this year. Our equipment was from the company Hague, and included a tracking dolly with a track, a mini-motion cam (hand hold) and a camframe (hand hold). We also had the tripod, but the tracking shots were made a lot easier to execute, and also looked a lot more authentic than when we had held them by hand or tried to zoom in/out to track last year.

We spent the majority of our double lesson accumulating footage, and spent the last quarter of an hour editing the footage in synchronisation with the timing on the track - another useful insight into how we will undertake our construction. As we got further than the other groups editing-wise, our group was given the master copy of the class video, which will hopefully be on the blog soon!

  1. I found this exercise really helpful as I realised the amount of footage we will need to shoot for our production.

  2. The exercise helped us think more about how we frame our shots more and how to compose the shots with movement and static shots. The lip synching was very difficult and we released how much footage we need to shoot however the kit we used was excellant.
